More Old Timers
September 18, 2007
Here is another article about the Old Timers weekend over Labor Day. People come from near and far to see their old friends again!Once again in September, Dorismarie Welcher came from New York City to celebrate her birthday in Aspen. She worked here many years at Bonnie’s restaurant on Aspen Mountain. This was Dorismarie’s 80th birthday, and Jonathan Lewis treated her and more than 30 of her Aspen friends to a brunch at the Hotel Jerome.Jewelry designer Christopher Walling, of Aspen and New York City, left town the end of August to attend a birthday party at Aiglemont, France, given by the Aga Khan for his brother, Prince Amyn, and his daughter, Princess Zahra. The Aga Khan is the hereditary spiritual leader of 15 million Ismalili Moslems, a world philanthropist (supporting hospitals caring for 2 million), businessman, and the owner of a famous racing stud. There were 800 at the party (400 for Prince Amyn and 400 for Princess Zahra). The guests included royalty such as Her Majesty Farah Diba, the Empress of Iran, HRH Princess Maria Pia of Savoy, HRH Princess Napoleon, TRH Prince and Princess Michael of Greece, and the brothers’ half-sister SA Princess Yasmin Aga Khan (the daughter of Aly Khan and Rita Hayworth).
Heard from former Aspenite Jan Francouer, who has had an art gallery for 17 years in New Bern, N.C., and has just built a new home and studio with a fabulous view of the water. The Francouers have had several visitors from Aspen, such as Connie Madsen and Dutch Hodges. In addition to Jan’s painting, she and husband Michael do a lot of pottery. Jan worked in the production department of The Aspen Times for many years.Undercurrent … Seeing all those people bending their heads and clutching their cell phones with their shoulders … I get a stiff neck just looking at them!
