RED CLIFF, Colo. ” A lost hiker who spent the night in the wilderness was found Thursday morning near the trailhead, authorities said.

A couple from New York, whose names were not available Thursday afternoon, were hiking Fancy Creek Trail Wednesday when the woman decided to go ahead of her tired husband, said Dan Smith, spokesman for Vail Mountain Rescue Group.

The woman later decided not to complete the trail loop and when she went back, she could not find her husband, Smith said.

Two rescuers searched for the man all night as he spent the night in a bivy sack, a weather-proof plastic bag, Smith said.

Five more rescuers began searching at 9:30 a.m. and about 10 a.m. they found the man on the trail about five minutes away from the trailhead, Smith said.

The couple were experienced hikers training for high altitude climbing in South America, but should not have separated, Smith said.

Fancy Creek Trail is a popular hiking loop south of Red Cliff in the Homestake area, Smith said.
