Minnesota: Clean sweep

Aspen Times Staff Report

Broomball’s best shuffled into Aspen this weekend for a memorable mix of broomball and Aspen fun.

The 1999 Rocky Mountain Broomball Classic enticed some of the world’s top teams to the Aspen Ice Garden for a three-day sweep of broomball on ice.

With local Aspen teams mixed in among the nationally ranked Minnesota clubs, play was staged in coed and men’s divisions.

Tres Crown of Minneapolis stunned the Minnesota Flames of Golden Valley 6-1 in the coed championship game.

And in the men’s division, Benning’s (Minn.) won 2-1 over the Tres Crown men’s team.

The Aspen coed team put on a strong performance among the national-caliber teams. Tracy Murtagh, playing with the Nomads, was selected as the outstanding women’s goalie of the tournament.

Aspen player Susie Cokley, the MVP of the Aspen league for the past three seasons, had a bit of a family reunion over the weekend. She played against Joe Landino of Minnesota, the MVP in the World Championships last year. And they’re long-lost cousins!
