Mick and Jack

Dear Editor:

I’m voting for Mick Ireland and Jack Johnson. For a generation, Mick has been one of the leaders responsible for making Aspen what it is, and Jack has been a quick learner on what it takes to keep it that way. I think it’s ironic that Marilyn Marks, in buying into Aspen, near the top of the market no less, was really voting with her bucks for the very benefits that come from the growth control, environmental policies and affordable housing which were pioneered and sustained by leaders like Mick and Jack.

It’s indefensible that, in pursuing her right-wing ideology and feeding her lust for power, she is running a typical Karl Rove-style campaign, trying to conceal her real agenda by using smear tactics that leave no defenders of traditional Aspen values unscathed, even extending her attacks to Mick’s teenage niece and to citizen volunteers like Phyllis Bronson.

This election has brought out a number of good candidates for mayor and City Council. Many voters are justifiably attracted to Andrew Kole’s creative ideas and energy and to LJ Erspamer’s amiable personality and long history of public involvement. I would like to suggest to convinced supporters of these candidates that, in our new instant run-off election format, they give their No. 2 ranking to Mick. In the council race, I hope that supporters of other candidates will agree that Jack Johnson deserves their No. 2 ranking.

More is at stake in this election than in any election in the modern history of Aspen. After a 40-year era of politically progressive city government, which just happens to coincide with Aspen’s emergence as the nation’s top resort community, who can imagine the changes the town would suffer under a right-wing mayor and council? Do we really want to take the risk finding out the hard way? Please vote Tuesday.
