Mick: a thoughtful and courageous mayor

Dear Editor:

Mick Ireland is a controversial mayor because he has a vision for Aspen and has worked hard to implement it. Sometimes people disagree with what Mick has in mind on a particular issue, and in true Aspen fashion speak their minds. Arguments are messy, and often people’s feelings are hurt a bit or their egos bruised. But so what? The kind of controversy that comes from healthy debate is just what Aspen needs to remain relevant and vibrant.

There are real issues facing Aspen today ” a collapsing real estate market, plummeting visitor numbers, unemployment, affordable housing, growth management, energy conservation and environmental stewardship. They are important and demand leadership. Aspenites may be able to fault Mick now and then for his communication style, but nobody can question his understanding of the issues we face or his commitment to making Aspen the best place it can be.

Mick has been thoughtful and courageous as Aspen’s mayor, resetting government policy and action to the slow-growth, housing-friendly, environmentally-sensible course that has long been our community consensus. Remember how unsettled everybody was about the intensity of development and size of buildings that went up in Aspen between 2003 and 2007?

Are we really ready to elect a new mayor who has promised not to ruffle people’s feathers? Because the only way not to ruffle people’s feathers is to say “yes” to whatever they want. But in doing so, you can bet Aspen will grow into something none of us recognize and few of us actually like.

The important thing with Mayor Mick is that the conversation is always about our community and our future. He has done good work for the city and the valley and deserves another term. Please vote for Mick Ireland on May 5.

Allyn Harvey
