Messy vitality, indeed

Dear Editor:The article published Nov. 10 in The Aspen Times regarding the “bust” of Club No Name last week for having nude dancers contained a few inaccuracies. While totally nude entertainment is not allowed in Colorado establishments serving liquor, so-called “topless” entertainment is. The law prohibits dancers from mingling with bar patrons, and bartenders and waitresses can’t be buff, but there can be topless dancers performing on a stage (Colo. Code of Reg. 47-900). The article made it sound as if any nudity whatsoever in the bar would have been illegal, which isn’t true.Detective Jim Crowley is quoted in the article as saying that 81611, the strip club that formerly operated in Aspen, never served alcohol. This is also untrue. When it opened in the spring of 1996, 81611 had a liquor license and featured topless dancers until the Aspen City Council passed an emergency “adult entertainment ordinance” later that summer. The club then became a “pop shop” with completely nude dancers, and no alcohol was served on the premises. In the fall of that year, the city’s adult entertainment ordinance was repealed by a referendum vote similar to the one that recently nixed a new visitor center next to the courthouse. By that time, however, Club 81611 had already passed into Aspen legend, and now a timeshare sales office stands in its place. Messy vitality, indeed.Gene AlderAspen
