Memorial Day events today

Aspen Times Staff Report

Several Memorial Day events today in Aspen will honor soldiers who lost their lives in wartime service to the United States.

Local Boy Scouts will decorate veterans’ gravesites with flowers.

At 11 a.m., an interfaith service will be held at United Methodist Church. Rev. Richard Lyon, a Vietnam War veteran, will preside.

A noon service will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located on the Pitkin County Courthouse lawn.

During the service, a granite park bench near the memorial will be commemorated to the memory of longtime Aspen resident and anti-war activist Claire Sandersen.

A community picnic will follow on the lawn of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The public is welcome. The Elks Club will provide meats for grilling.

All veterans will be honored guests at the picnic. Other attendees should bring a cold salad or a simple dessert to share.
