Meeting set for seniors interested in housing projects

Sarah S. Chung

Seniors interested in applying for the Aspen Country Inn units are invited to an information session on June 10 at the senior center on Castle Creek Road.

Applications for the 40-unit project are available at the Housing Authority office, but there are some aspects that may need some clarifying, said Ramona Markalunas, chairwoman of the Senior Housing Task Force.

“People may feel they need some extra instruction going through their applications because of the additional information needed for the tax credits,” Markalunas said.

Aspen Country Inn received some federal funding through tax credits, because it is a seniors-only project.

“We’ve needed this for a long time,” said Marty Ames, director of Pitkin County senior services.

“This is really targeted to those having the toughest time staying in the community,” Ames noted. “It’ll really help people who have spent years and even decades working here to stay here. These are people who have paid their dues.”

The meeting on June 10 is scheduled for 1 p.m., but if there is more interest in a later hour, around 5 p.m., the time may change. Those planning to attend should call Markalunas at 925-3399 if the later time is more convenient.

The senior center is located at 275 Castle Creek Road.

Aspen Country Inn is slated to be ready for residents at the end of August or first week of September.
