Measure a business’ worth

Dear Editor:Some of the arguments being used against city participation in efforts to save Explore Booksellers is that the city cannot become involved in saving every business that fails. This argument makes the presumption that all business are equal in their role and status in the community, and that the City Council does not have the brains to distinguish between those businesses which are unique and important to both tourist and locals, and those businesses which are, like McDonald’s, part of a national chain and in no way important to our image or quality of life. The Council can and should be able to recognize local businesses that are importantly unique, and provide assistance in their survival.Raymond AugerAspen
