McInnis honor is insulting

Dear Editor:

Under the worst administration for environmental protection in U.S. history, the Colorado Canyons National Conservation Area will be renamed the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area.

Rep. Scott McInnis is the poster boy for peddling influence and selling democracy down the river. After sitting on Dick Cheney’s lap lighting his cigars with $100 bills, McInnis will use his influence to benefit energy corporations. McInnis certainly worked on good legislation but that is overshadowed by joining the legislators from both parties that leave office and become lobbyists.

McInnis introduced legislation with cute but insulting names like, “Healthy Forest Initiative.” This is a slap in the face to people that work for true conservation of wild lands.

If they want to honor someone for preserving wild places try Sloan Shoemaker or others at Aspen Wilderness Workshop. There are many groups and individuals from here in our valley (that are neither tree huggers nor clear cutters) that deserve recognition. They work to promote awareness of harmful uses of public land and poor legislation.

While we are out hiking, biking, and riding our snowmobiles, horses and motorbikes, they work to preserve our heritage. Frankly, I don’t know how they show up every day when they keep taking hits from an administration like Bush’s.
