CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. ” John McCain raised $3.2 million Tuesday at a fundraiser at the suburban Denver home of investor Charlie Gallagher.

Guests at the event ate appetizers and received gift-wrapped copies of McCain’s “Faith of Our Fathers”.

The presidential hopeful took questions from the crowd during the fundraiser. When one woman asked “Can we own this issue on gas and say we will do offshore drilling?”, McCain concurred. But McCain didn’t directly answer another question about whether the federal government would fix the price of oil at $30 a barrel.

McCain said his Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, was “one of the greatest speakers in American history” and said he was sure he would shine at the Democratic National Convention, which will be held in Denver next month.

“We’re the underdog in this race,” McCain said. “But I am pleasantly surprised that we are only behind a few points in most polls. There’s even one crazy poll where we’re ahead by a few points.”

McCain’s visit was his second to Colorado in less than a week. He spoke Friday to a veterans group in Denver before traveling to Aspen to meet with the Dalai Lama.

McCain is scheduled to speak Wednesday at a company in Aurora that sells and rents heavy construction equipment.
