Mayor loves her taxes
September 12, 2003
(This letter was originally addressed to Mayor Helen Klanderud.)
Last fall, along with two council candidates that were not re-elected, you endorsed spending $300,000 of our city tax funds to subsidize the annual ARC operating budget to supplement income from user fees.
The Aspen Times recently reported a potential additional subsidy of “$100,000 or more” that will be borne annually, exclusively and in perpetuity by city taxpayers.
A month ago you endorsed spending more city taxpayer funds to cover an estimated $100,000 annual expense by annexing the hospital. This expense was previously borne by most of the county but will now be borne annually, exclusively and in perpetuity by city taxpayers.
Recently you have been the city’s representative on a task force studying the construction of a new visitor center. The rent for this new privately owned visitor center begins at $105,000 per year, which is a significant increase from the $27,000 now charged annually by the city to ACRA for using the current Rio Grande visitor center.
This week you were in the minority of council attempting to reject a free parking incentive for certain hybrid vehicles claiming, in part, that the estimated $5,000 in annual lost parking revenue would not offset the gain to our community from encouraging these hybrid vehicles.
