May days

Springtime in the Rockies is a lot like the Quiet Years in Aspen, a period when time slows and the local population temporarily diminishes.

It can also be pretty unpredictable weatherwise, as evidenced over Cinco de Mayo weekend, when an unexpected storm left several inches of snow blanketing Aspen. Ironically, on the evening of May 5,

Aspen Snow Removal hosted its employee party for staff and friends. The company chose the offseason date to have an outdoor get-together with dinner, kayaking, horseshoe tossing and other activities. As snow accumulated outside, however, guests enjoyed Mexican food and the de la Hoya-Mayweather fight on HBO inside. By the time the party ended, Aspen Snow Removal’s finest were plowing the driveway and main road to town to enable guests to get home without sliding into a ditch.

Within days it was back to springtime climes and backyard barbecues.

Though many of the bars and restaurants have shut down for offseason, several grooms and brides-to-be celebrated their bachelor and bachelorette parties at establishments that remained open.

Jeff and Kristi Bradley hosted a first birthday barbecue for their daughter, Josie, midmonth at their ABC condo. Friends of all ages surrounded the Aspen native to ring in the first 12 months of her life.
