Massive embassy is bad idea

Dear Editor:It is surprising no one seems to be bothered that U.S. tax dollars are going to build the “New Baghdad embassy as big as Vatican City” (The Aspen Times, April 15).The complex will contain 21 buildings spread over 100 acres and is about one-third complete. The land was turned over to the U.S. in a secret agreement. It will contain its own defense force, water wells, electricity plant, wastewater treatment facility and employ 5,500 people – half listed as security. It will be the largest U.S. embassy in the world, as typical projects cover 10 acres. This is how part of our $270 billion has been spent in Iraq. Meanwhile, Iraqis are afraid to go out in the streets. Some live in tents, with little if any water or electricity, and an average of 85 bodies are delivered to the Baghdad morgue a day.
