Marks makes sense

Dear Editor:

Our money is the issue in the mayor’s election.

Aspen’s mayor only serves for two years, so we can correct course quickly if a mayor can’t handle the job. Our next mayor will undoubtedly spend 90 percent of his or her time addressing Aspen’s financial crisis for the next two-year term. Unfortunately the current City Council leadership is either incapable or disinclined to face the economic reality now challenging Aspen. It’s time to get real, and get real quickly before more damage is done.

Wasting $10 million on the lumberyard purchase can’t be made up by taxing real estate! The affordable housing fund has been gutted, with $15 million owing to the Wheeler Opera House. The city spends more than $100 million a year. A member of City Council told me the majority on council spends money like “drunken sailors.” Drunken socialists might be more accurate, which isn’t the exact qualifications we need in charge of our government right now.

We all are concerned about the environment, the traffic, growth, affordable housing and the usual issues. Whoever is elected mayor won’t be able to do much on those issues due to limited funding, but they will have a tremendous two-year challenge getting the city’s finances under control. Personally, right now I’d rather give my money to a trained professional manager with real world financial experience than a career politician. I’m voting for Marilyn Marks because she is best qualified to address the city’s primary concern for the next two years: our money.
