Marks hit the nail on the head

Dear Editor:

Next month’s mayoral election will be the most important in recent memory. The national economic calamity, and its local effect ” store closings, the rise in county unemployment, and public budget stress ” all point to a time for bold leadership. The past two years have given us the mess at Burlingame, the overpayment by millions of dollars for future employee housing, the meal purchase card fiasco, and ordinance 30. Further, the current mayor’s latest verbal tirade abused a number of citizens with his calloused remarks about expanding the tourist demographic to more than “Just Bernie Madoff victims.” The mayor, to his credit, did apologize. However, the clock is ticking and the success of our town depends on immediate leadership, creativity, and vision.

The April 17 Times featured the top priorities of the candidates. Mayor Ireland focused on the environment and energy conservation, both noble ideas. Long term, I would agree with this assessment; short term he is wrong. Marilyn Marks hit the nail on the head. She said, “Jobs created by the private sector, and all subordinate priorities should advance this mission.” Ms. Marks will provide Aspen with a fresh perspective, new ideas and a plan to lead our town through this difficult economic time. I urge your support for Marilyn Marks in this critical election.
