Margaret Guns was born in the Netherlands on Nov. 30, 1924. She died June 5 in Grand Junction.

Margaret married Leo Guns in 1955 in Holland. They moved to New York City in 1956 and relocated to Aspen in 1974.Margaret loved to hike, bike and cross-country ski around the many trails of the Roaring Fork Valley. She loved to travel, which included many trips to Europe, where much of her family still resides.

Margaret had been living in Grand Junction for the past two years. She was diagnosed with cancer in October 2005; she fought the cancer with great strength and determination. Her family and friends are all proud of her, and she will be missed.

Margaret is survived by her brother Harry Smink of the Netherlands; sister Mary Smink Franken of the Netherlands; daughter Irene Coder and granddaughter Andrea, of Grand Junction; daughter Lily Guns Whittier, her husband, David, and grandchildren Matthew and Anya of Basalt.A Mass for Margaret will take place at St. Mary Catholic Church in Aspen at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 14. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Hospice of Grand Junction, PO Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
