March music fest in Aspen wins go-ahead

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN – The Aspen City Council unanimously approved Monday night the Aspen Skiing Company’s application to host a three-day music festival in Wagner Park in March. The Skico says the move would jump-start the economy in town during what has become a lull in the ski season.

Councilman Torre, after saying he would not support the event because there were too many problems with the application, voted to approve it on the condition the Skico address those concerns in a presentation it will give to the council on Sept. 13.

Those problems include worries that the planned five-and-a-half hours of music to be showcased on each of the three days would be excessive and that corporate sponsorship of the event would exclude local nonprofits and businesses.

Deric Gunshor, a Skico official promoting the festival, said the company would be happy to address those concerns and offer solutions.

He also said the company would rent out the Wheeler Opera House, located near the park, and would lose its ability to host events during that weekend and during the preparation of the festival.
