Man whose body was found in Carbondale ditch identified

Authorities have identified a man whose body was found Sunday evening in the Sopris Park ditch in Carbondale as 29-year-old Ryan Becvarik of Carbondale.

According to Garfield County Coroner Rob Glassmire, the initial investigation into Becvarik’s death indicates that it was an accidental drowning, although the exact cause and manner remained under investigation, he said in a statement.

An autopsy performed Monday revealed no trauma or suspicious circumstances, Glassmire said.

The circumstances as to why Becvarik was in the water were not known, and anyone who may have seen him prior to his death is asked to contact the coroner’s office at 970-665-6335.

Becvarik was found face down around 6:10 p.m. submerged in the water in the irrigation ditch that runs through the town’s central park during a concert.

Witnesses called 911 and first responders attempted to revive him before he was taken by ambulance to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. Becvarik was officially pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour later, according to the coroner’s release.

Bystanders reported Sunday evening that some children playing around the ditch initially found the body. Carbondale police Sunday confirmed that the man was dead but provided no other details.
