August 18, 2005
A Basalt man crashed his car into the Basalt post office Thursday afternoon before running into a second car on Midland Avenue. No one was injured in either crash. According to Basalt police, the driver, 60, told officers that his foot slipped off the brake pedal as he was pulling into a parking spot at the post office at 2:20 p.m.Officer George Dow said the man’s Toyota 4Runner did “quite a bit of damage” to one of the post office’s walls, almost going into the building. Dow said he would release the driver’s name today.Just after the first crash, the driver backed out of the area and drove down Midland Avenue toward Highway 82, where he collided with a vehicle heading into town driven by a 23-year-old man from South Carolina. Dow said the older man reported feeling disoriented after the crash with the post office when his airbags deployed – alcohol is not suspected to be part of the accidents, he said. The second crash sent the younger man’s Oldsmobile sedan into a dirt lot nearby, while the driver of the 4Runner veered into a field, coming to rest in a drainage ditch.Dow said the Oldsmobile was totaled by the accident. Charges will be filed, Dow said, but he must first continue to investigate the accident today.
