Man arrested after shooting gun in New Castle, no injuries reported

A man was arrested after firing a gun during a domestic disturbance in New Castle on Tuesday night, according to law enforcement officials. No injuries were reported.

The incident happened around 7:12 p.m. near Seventh Street and Main. New Castle Police responded to reports of gunfire and later confirmed it was not an officer-involved shooting. Officials have not released further details, citing an ongoing investigation.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office assisted New Castle officers at the scene but was dismissed shortly after the suspect was taken into custody.

“By the time our guys got there, it was over with,” Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Walt Stowe said. “The guy was already arrested.”

Stowe said the suspect, an elderly man, was involved in a domestic dispute and fired his gun before police arrived.

A post on the Nextdoor app, though unconfirmed, claimed a U.S. Marine on leave heard the gunfire, fired a shot to scare the suspect and tackled him after he dropped his weapon. The post also stated that police arrived quickly and made the arrest.

The Marine declined to comment.

The identity of the man in custody has not been released. New Castle police said more details may become available as the investigation continues.
