Malone supports sustainable community

Dear Editor:

Ask just about anyone why we live here and the reasons are pretty much the same: the quality of our life, open spaces, wildlife, fresh air, clean water and abundant recreational opportunities. We enjoy having a rural character combined with great small towns.

Over the past few decades our population has grown. With added population come numerous issues and a balancing act that must be performed by our elected officials to preserve our way of life.

Dee Malone is running for Pitkin County commissioner for District 5. I believe she would be a dedicated public servant. Recently, she walked through Pitkin County for five days learning more about what concerns us. She told me she noticed a huge diversity of people, economic levels and living circumstances.

With all this diversity there was also a commonality in people’s desires. They want development to be curbed, a decent place to live and raise a family and to be treated with respect. People commented on how the county puts up stumbling blocks and regulations for making improvements on their homes or making a living on their farm or ranch. Permit fees are exorbitant, and at every turn there is another fee or regulation. The permit process needs to be revamped.

Dee has a strong background in science and education. When making decisions concerning the environment she understands using “best science” to sustainably manage and conserve open space and natural resources. She believes in tax breaks for alternative energy use in our homes, more recycling programs and will work on our housing issues for workers. Using Dee’s words, “Three factors are essential for sustainable community: a healthy environment, a robust economy and a strong community.” I urge you to vote for Dee this election.
