Malfunction causes outage
A malfunction cut power to downtown restaurants, businesses and residences for more than an hour Tuesday evening.Holy Cross Electric lost its main feed into town because of a malfunction at its switching station at the Airport Business Center, according to Aspen City Manager Steve Barwick.The outage occurred around 7:10 p.m. and lasted until around 8:30 p.m. A short outage again cut off lights in town around 10:45 p.m., sending up groans and cheers from residents and guests around the city.Businesses were forced to close while the power was out because cash registers could not operate. Restaurant patrons wandered into the streets to find out what was going on. Traffic lights were not functioning at several major intersections, and police dispatchers received a flood of calls, but no related major incidents were reported.
