Several months ago the Aspen Skiing Co. and Intrawest presented their proposed plans for on-mountain improvements in connection with their Base Village Sketch Plan application.

As originally proposed, they were going to replace the Fanny Hill and Burlingame chairs with a single quad, Sam’s Knob Express, which would start at the Mall level and terminate at Sam’s Knob, with a mid-mountain load/unload station at approximately the terminus of the existing Burlingame chair.

Based upon a very significant amount of negative feedback from a very diverse cross section of this community as to where this new lift should start, the Skico and Intrawest revised their original proposal and placed the start of the lift at the level of the new Base Village. The community at large praised this change.

However, at last Monday’s Snowmass Village Town Council meeting, Councilman Arnie Mordkin appeared to be re-opening this issue and wants to rethink whether we should go back to the original plan. He plans to revisit this issue at next Monday’s Town Council meeting.

It is incumbent upon all of us who are concerned about this issue to communicate our position to all members of the Snowmass Village Town Council. Contact numbers can be obtained from the town clerk at 923-3777, or from the town’s Web site

It makes no sense for the vast majority of our residents and guests who commence their ski day at the level of the new Base Village to be artificially forced to take off their skis to ride a lift to the Mall, off-load and then re-load to another lift to get them to get them to mid-mountain and to the top of Sam’s Knob.
