Maintenance work in the works for Aspen airport

ASPEN – Pavement maintenance on virtually all of the surfaces except the runway at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport will take place this year.

The work originally was to be performed in 2012, but weather limitations and a limited number of bidders for the work led to its delay, according to Brian Grefe, assistant director of aviation.

The work, either to be done this spring or to be split between the spring and fall offseasons, will include sealing and repairing cracks and joints in the existing asphalt and concrete and the application of a sealer on all of the aircraft parking ramps and the taxiway that parallels the runway. The ramp at the Airport Operations Center off Owl Creek Road also will be repaired and resealed.

Similar work on the runway is planned for next year.

This year’s project will cost about $750,000, paid for in part by a $400,000 Colorado Department of Transportation – Division of Aeronautics grant. The remainder, including a 10 percent match for the grant, will be covered by airport funds.

The work will be done without affecting flights, though there will be some disruption to where aircraft can be parked while the project is under way, Grefe said. The work will be done in phases.
