Mail service shake-up

Dear Editor:

I am shocked and disappointed by the recent proposal to terminate mail processing at the West Glenwood plant. This is the financial hub of Colorado with major ski areas operated by Aspen Skiing Co. and Vail Resorts within an hour of here.

It is my understanding that the Aspen post office alone generates as much revenue in one day as Grand Junction. Aspen represents only a fraction of our service area. Additionally, the recent major expansion of the Garfield County Airport near here in Rifle is a direct result of the booming gas and oil industry in this area. The airport commission is offering very attractive incentives for major corporations to move here. Why are we moving away?

If consolidation is necessary, we should be looking at processing everything for the Western Slope in centrally-located Glenwood, not out on the edge of the desert.
