Mag chloride error

Janet Urquhart’s Feb. 5 story in The Aspen Times, “Aspen to quit using de-icers,” was in error, stating that magnesium chloride “hasn’t been applied within the city limits since February 1998.”

The controversial de-icer again was applied only this last December on a trial basis, which produced an outcry from a tourist (in a letter to the editor) and locals alike about chemical soup in the streets.

The error resulted in a ponderous letter from a non-Aspen resident, taking up a disproportionate amount of “letters” space considering its high point was grounded on the erroneous assumption conveyed in The Aspen Times.
