Mad Hatter’s Ball returns to Aspen’s Wheeler Opera House on Jan. 9

The Mad Hatter’s Ball returns to the Wheeler Opera House on Jan. 9 as part of a kickoff to the Winterskol celebration.

Dubbed “Mardi Gras in Winter Dress,” the Mad Hatter’s Ball is a Winterskol tradition dating back to the early 1950s.

This year, the ball will include a performance by Jes Grew starting at 8 p.m. There also will be a contest for “Best Hat,” judged by the Winterskol King and Queen (7:30 p.m.). The winner gets two passes to Aspen Laff Fest.

Also on tap, the Aspen State Teachers College will present Aspen History 101, a crash course in local lore. Dr. Slats Cabbage, Klaus Obermeyer and resident history “coaches” will cruise through the decades in an entertaining and fun way, including a multimedia presentation. Aspen History 101 starts at 5:30 p.m. and is free. All attendees will get a student ID card, good for $2 beer at the Mad Hatter’s Ball (while supplies last).

The festivities will be presented by the Aspen Historical Society, the Aspen Chamber Resort Association and the Wheeler Opera House.
