ASPEN ” Texas singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett, who will be performing at the Wheeler Opera House on Saturday, did an extra gig for a friend Thursday at the top of one of Aspen’s ski areas.

Lovett, playing in a five-piece band, performed for more than two hours at the Cliffhouse restaurant atop Buttermilk in honor of longtime friend Gerry Goldstein’s 65th birthday. More than 100 of his Goldstein’s closest friends turned out for the occasion.

The show took place in the southern dining area of the ski area restaurant, along with a buffet luncheon, and Lovett offered up a number of favorites from a career that has spanned nearly three decades, produced 13 albums and four Grammy awards.

For the key song of the day, Lovett called on another friend, long-time local musician Dan Sadowsky (also known as Pastor Mustard), to sing Happy Birthday to the guest of honor.
