Lunch money for hurricane victims

Dear Editor:What did you have for lunch today? Did you eat out? What did it cost you? Ten dollars? Twelve dollars? Fifteen dollars? Did you even think twice about spending that money on lunch? Do you eat out once a week? Do you eat out every day? What if once a week you made a sandwich at home and brought it to work instead? Would you have spent that money anyway? The victims of Hurricane Katrina don’t have either luxury. Think about it. What if everyone in our community gave what they would have spent eating lunch out, just once a week, to the American Red Cross relief efforts? It would be so easy to do and would help so many. What if just once a week you went for a walk with that homemade sandwich in hand and donated the $10 to $15 at Carl’s, or at Alpine Bank, or online, or even by phone? We all spend money so automatically on daily life without even thinking about it, without even thinking about how fortunate we are to have it and be able to spend it. Our community making one simple effort once a week could make a world of difference in the lives of so many, who now have absolutely nothing. Think about it.The need is going to continue for such a long time; there is no quick fix to this situation. I, like so many, have a hard time wrapping my head around this tragedy and can’t help but think, “What if it was me?” “What if it was my family?” So think about it, and if you feel so compelled, act on it.Carl’s Pharmacy has donation boxes at the front registers. There is a Red Cross account set up at Alpine Bank. If you can’t get away from your desk, you can go online at http://www.redcross.org, or you can call (800) HELP NOW (435-7669).No donation is too small. Any donation will make your heart feel so big.Cyndi FielderAspen
