BASALT ” A Basalt man was fortunate to escape with relatively minor injuries from an accident at the main intersection in Basalt at rush hour Thursday, Fire Chief Scott Thompson said.

The man’s Honda Civic was demolished after it collided with a pickup at the intersection of Highway 82 and Basalt Avenue. The driver of the Civic was identified by friends as Shawn Hunsberger, a popular personal trainer in Basalt. Hunsberger suffered a broken wrist and was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital, friends said. He was expected to be released Friday.

Troopers from the Colorado State Patrol investigated the accident but no report was available Thursday night or Friday morning. Therefore, details on circumstances of the accident were unavailable.

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. and snarled the commute on the highway. The upvalley lanes were blocked, and downvalley-bound traffic was diverted through Basalt until about 5:45 p.m.

Witnesses who saw Hunsberger’s car were amazed he wasn’t more seriously injured. The front bumper hung down after the impact and the hood and engine compartment was creased. Thompson said a “minor extrication” was required to remove the driver.
