Kindergarten through third-grade students in the Roaring Fork Valley Summer Advantage Program learned about companion animal care from members of Lucky Day Animal Rescue of Colorado on July 29.

The students were taught about responsibility, safety and the role of a rescue organization in helping animals in need.

Supported by Lucky Day board members and volunteers, live rescue dogs as well as life-sized stuffed animal dogs Roxie and Frankie served as examples of how rescue organizations help to find homes for animals in need, how to properly treat and care for pets and how to safely approach dogs. Sopris Elementary and Crystal River Elementary School Summer Advantage Program scholars also were given humane-themed, bilingual coloring books to reinforce these important messages.

Education is an essential component of Lucky Day Animal Rescue’s three-part mission. By teaching children how to respect animals as well as how to read their body language in order to properly interact with animals, the nonprofit aims to give children tools for awareness and safety and inspire compassion toward all living creatures.

Future education program endeavors include engaging the local Hispanic community, presenting information to third-grade through high school-aged kids, and educating adults about companion animal responsibility, population control and how to make a difference for animals through voting and legislature.
