Love at first sight

Jon Maletz

It must’ve been fate.Leaning against a rack on the top floor of a ski shop, I spotted them among a sea of cardboard boxes. I had been eyeing this pair of Völkl Karma twin-tips from afar, but now we came face-to-face. And it was glorious. What were the chances that one of the two remaining pairs was the exact size I was searching for? But there the 177s were. Taunting me to pick them up. I couldn’t resist. Truthfully, I never even tried. I told myself to walk out of the shop immediately. Save my money. Get some Ben and Jerry’s instead. Avoid making a rash decision. That green “40 percent off” sticker, however, was a little too difficult to ignore. I mean, that’s a deal too good to ignore. OK, I’m weak.I walked out the shop carrying the skis on my shoulder and a grin on my face. My credit card threatened to burn a hole in my back pocket. I didn’t know it was possible to experience guilt and joy simultaneously until that very moment. I walked past all the shops, looking in the windows to see the reflection of my newest purchase. I didn’t mind the glances; after all, I also found it a little odd I’d choose the day after the lifts close to buy some skis I won’t try out for seven or so months. The offseason’s going to seem a whole lot longer this time around. Heck, the anticipation is already killing me. Instead of heading home to find the ideal spot to prop my skis – in plain sight so I’ll be able to admire them from both the kitchen and living room at the same time, of course – I went straight to work. I’ll need a few weeks to pay these off. I’m sure I’ll be able to afford bindings by July or August. It’s a good thing I like pasta and $1.30 frozen pizzas.
