Louis Tornare 83, died at a hospital in Winterthur, Switzerland on July 14, 2009. Louis was a 20-year resident of Aspen. He came here with his wife, Heidi, in 1989 and they made their home on Hopkins Street until her death in 2000.
Louis was an integral part of the operations at Louis’ Swiss Pastry, for whom the bakery was named. Many locals will remember him there and some will be lucky enough to have participated in the Saturday morning tradition of having Louis’ homemade “rosti” for breakfast.
His was a life well lived. He enjoyed his family very much and is survived by his eight children, 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild and several siblings living in Switzerland. He traveled often to Europe to visit with family and was on such a trip and had planned to stay until mid August when he became sick and was hospitalized first in Germany and then later transported to Switzerland.
He will be fondly remembered as a gentle and generous person who enjoyed his time helping in the bakery, wood working, card playing and traveling. His passing has left a large hole in the hearts of the Louis’ Swiss Pastry crew.
He will be sorely missed by all those who loved him.
