Loss of innocent fun

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:I am in total agreement with Lisa Markalunas regarding her letter of July 28. The removal of that treehouse is another stark reminder of how we are continually being deprived of our avenues for innocent fun. This kind of overprotection creates an ever-increasing lack of freedom to enjoy life because of an overly fear-based approach to what is allowed by authority. How can one learn to fall well if one is never allowed to fall? The more restriction there is, the less opportunity children have to learn and to become strong in themselves. (The same applies to adults, of course.) That treehouse furnished a nice little place for some pretty harmless adventure close to home. Good things like fantasy and laughter. You may think that I am taking this too far into the philosophy of a healthy society, but I assure you that when important things get taken away from us a little bit at a time, people tend to not notice the weakening. Little things that are healthy, happy components of everyday life, simple things, make for a strong social climate. A treehouse, to me, still remains a great alternative to video games and “arranged” play time.Who are these misguided missiles who want to condemn innocent play as dangers to children and then destroy their toys?Karen LundyAspen
