Look in the mirror, Gary

Dear Editor:

I share Gary Hubbell’s love of newspapers, a lifelong pleasure whose demise I dread, and find his final paragraph a ringing endorsement of just what a newspaper ought to be.

Why, then, after beginning his piece by praising newspapers to his sons, does he include two women who would like children of their own in a “freak show” list of what goes into a bad newspaper? This is a man who titles his column after a desire to embrace trees, what might be called arborality, after displaying the normality of his family in his opener. In mocking others for what he enjoys himself, he shows the double-standard, hypocrisy, incoherence and just plain meanness so much more accessible on the Internet that is replacing the newspapers he loves while sparing the trees he kinkily admires. When newspapers finally succumb, I hope he will hazard a glance into the mirror.
