ASPEN ” Some Aspen lodges hope a special program appeals to ecoconscious, green globetrotters over the next three months.

Five properties are promoting offseason and early ski season packages that include offsetting the greenhouse gases that guests will produce by traveling to Aspen. When tourists book at least two nights at participating lodges between now and Dec. 22, they will receive a “Canary Tag” certificate confirming that $60 has been invested in carbon offsets on their behalf.

The $60 is enough to offset the carbon footprint for three commercial airline passengers from New York City to Aspen, plus the average driving in the area for one week and the hotel stay, according to the partners in the promotion. The $60 will be invested by the city of Aspen in a third-party, verified energy efficiency or renewable energy project.

The program is called the Aspen ZGreen Carbon Offset Package. The partners include the city of Aspen, Aspen Chamber Resort Association, Stay Aspen-Snowmass as well as the participating lodges ” Aspen Square, Gant Condominiums, L’Auberge d’Aspen, McCartney Property Management and Sky Hotel.

It’s too soon to gauge reaction to the program, said Chelsea VanVleet, a public relations coordinator for Promo Inc., which is promoting the program. However, research shows that wealthy travelers, like those who come to Aspen, are concerned about carbon offsets, she said. The package is being promoted nationally.

Aspen’s travel industry decided to team with the city of Aspen, which started the “Canary Tag” program. Tags are sold to individuals, businesses and special events to help them offset the carbon they produce.
