Business Monday briefs: Sponsor returns for Aspen race, Skico expands ‘Limelight’ trademark

Sponsor returns for July 4 race

Wednesday’s Boogie’s Buddy Race will welcome the return of East Coast Asset Management-Michael Connolly as its sponsor for the second straight year.

“We are thrilled to work with Michael and East Coast Asset Management for the second year,” said Lindsay Lofaro, executive director of the Buddy Program. “The race is an important part of our community and a Fourth of July tradition for many locals and visitors, not to mention the importance it has in supporting our youth mentoring programs.”

The Buddy Program works with 529 youth from Aspen to Carbondale and provides its programs and services at no cost.

Connolly said the race has been a family affair for years, including the participation of his late father, Art.

“My dad loved the Boogie’s Buddy Race and what it stands for,” Connolly said. “He ran it many times over the course of three decades. It was always a highlight of the Fourth and of summer. He had cancer three times and ran the race several times while he was going through treatment. He’d smile when Boogie cheered him on by shouting, ‘Way to go, old man!’”

The 5-mile race will start and end in Rio Grande Park this year with the signature uphill at Cemetery Lane in addition to the Power Plant hill. For more information on the race or to register visit http://www.buddy program.org/events/annual-buddy-5-mile-race

Skico expands ‘Limelight’ trademark

Aspen Skiing. Co, the owner of the Limelight Hotels in Aspen, Idaho and Snowmass Village, filed a trademark application June 12 to protect its clothing and apparel bearing the “Limelight” name.

Skico already has trademarked “Limelight” for its lodges, now it is expanding the restrictions, company spokesman Jeff Hanle said.

Restaurants conserve water

Seventeen commercial kitchens in Aspen are conserving water by taking part in the city’s water efficiency program for restaurants and hotels. The restaurants received a free high-efficiency dish sprayer and installation. Each valve replacement can save the Aspen business 20,000 gallons of water and $140 annually on utility bills, according to the city.

The restaurants that participated in this sprayer replacement program were Hotel Jerome, White House Tavern, Mi Chola, Public House, Taster’s, Aspen Tap, Matsuhisa, Paradise Bakery, Limelight Hotel, Aspen Valley Hospital, Willow Creek, Bumps, Highlands Taqueria, 7908, Maru, Belly Up and Clark’s Market. The total number of valves replaced were over 20, as some of these locations have multiple sprayers.

Free training for landscape professionals

The Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper Course debuts in Colorado next week. The free training provides landscape professionals with 20 hours of education on principles of proper plant selection for the local climate, irrigation system auditing and maintenance, controller programming and operation and sustainable landscaping.

The three-day course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 9 to 11 at the Truscott Property Management Office (18 Truscott Place, Aspen).

The city decided to offer the course after implementing its water efficient landscape ordinance, currently in its pilot phase, in June 2017.
