ASPEN – A local skier was missing after an avalanche occurred Tuesday afternoon near one of the Aspen area’s most popular backcountry huts.

Eight skiers were in the group when the avalanche happened around 4 p.m. near the Lindley Hut outside of Ashcroft, south of Aspen. The skiers, all locals, are very experienced in the backcountry, said Renee Rayton, Pitkin County Sheriff’s deputy.

“Right now the skier is just missing,” she said. “We’re not confirming the person is in the slide.”

Details about the slide’s dimensions and where it occurred were not immediately available.

“We’ve got a ways to go,” Rayton said. “We’ll know more [Wednesday] morning.”

Authorities were notified around 6 p.m. Mountain Rescue Aspen members were responding Tuesday night.

The Aspen area avalanche danger is high above treeline on slopes facing east, southeast and south after the weekend saw 3 feet of snow in places, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. The weekend saw a large cycle of avalanches, and “conditions are still very dangerous,” according to the center.

“Large avalanches have occurred in the backcountry, some running full track, reaching the valley bottoms,” the center’s website said. “Drifting snow will form more dangerous slabs on southerly aspects near and above treeline, stressing an already tender snowpack.”
