Local arrested for brandishing knife

Aspen Times Staff Report

Aspen Police arrested a local man after he allegedly drew a knife on another man in the stairwell leading up to New York Pizza on the Hyman Avenue Mall early Sunday morning.

Sean P. Weiss, 25, of Aspen, was arrested for menacing with a deadly weapon, a felony, according to Officer Brian Heeney. Weiss was booked into the Pitkin County Jail and bonded out a few hours later on a $2,500 bond, according to jail officials.

Heeney said a crowd of people was waiting in the stairwell of New York Pizza at about 2 a.m. Sunday, when a shoving and shouting match began between two parties.

“One guy then pulled out a knife and held it to the other’s throat,” Heeney said. “The victim grabbed the suspect by his throat and slammed him against the opposite wall.”

Heeney said Weiss then took off running out the back door of the restaurant. Police contacted Weiss shortly after the incident, and three witnesses, including the victim, identified him as the man who had pulled the knife, Heeney said.

Heeney said Weiss was in possession of a pocket knife with a two-and-three-quarter-inch folding blade when he was arrested.

“[The knife] left a mark on the victim’s neck, but it didn’t break the skin,” Heeney said.
