List: Aspen second to only Vail
We’re No. 2!
That’s according to yet another list, this one by the financial technology firm SmartAsset, which released its ratings of America’s best ski towns this week.
Aspen trailed only to the Interstate 70 resort of Vail on the list.
“As the perennial host of the Winter X Games, Aspen is nearly synonymous with ‘ski town’ in the popular imagination,” SmartAsset gushed. “While it certainly has great skiing, there is much more to do in Aspen than shred.”
SmartAsset said that of the 128 ski towns it analyzed, Aspen had the seventh highest concentration of entertainment establishments, which include concert venues, movie theaters and museums. It also had the 15th highest density of bars and restaurants.
The ratings also were based on unemployment data, housing affordability, average snowfall, number of chair lifts and vertical drop.
“Without any exception the worst snow storm known since the advent of the railroad west of Leadville has been raging over the crest of the continental divide since last Thursday,” asserted the Aspen Tribune on January 31, 1899.
