Like Gretchen, this jacket is the Mane event
Special to Aspen Times Weekly
Perhaps this jacket got its name for the lion’s mane surrounding its hood, or possibly for the lionesses that rock it.
Either way, locally-raised snowboarding superstar Gretchen Bleiler certainly got it right when she teamed up with Oakley designers to create her signature line.
The “Mane” jacket combines function and fashion. It’s amazing how its stylish features are also so technical.
To start, the jacket practically zips itself. The leather straps are magnetic, so there is no time wasted fiddling with silly snaps or buttons when heading to the slopes.
The large belt is not only a fashion statement, but it keeps the cold air and snow out. The tradeoff for fashion is that taking the belt on and off can be tedious.
On the back of the jacket there is another magnet that keeps the lion’s mane in place while you’re trying to imitate Gretchen’s signature 540 crippler in the halfpipe. Inside there are even more features: An iPod pocket, removable powder skirt and a zipper that is compatible with the matching pants.
What’s even more impressive about this jacket is its warmth. While not weighing you down, it keeps you really warm.
With most of my snowboard jackets, I have been the layer queen. I usually start off with a lightweight long underwear top, followed by a couple of fleece tops.
With the “Mane” I only need that lightweight top and I stay nice and toasty on the lift.
This is also great when it comes to wearing the jacket out on the town at night. With other jackets you are forced to forgo fashion for function.
With this jacket you can still wear a cute outfit, throw the jacket over top and stay warm without sweating in the bars.
If I had a nickel for every compliment I received on this jacket, I could probably buy the yellow one … for just $280.
