Lift a brush to Dottie Fox

Dear Editor:The papers have been generous in recognizing Dottie Fox’s unquestionably formidable accomplishments as an environmentalist and even her wonderful talent as a watercolorist; then they mention briefly that she taught for 18 years at CMC.I would like to speak for her many students in those 18 years, as I, like so many others, took her class semester after semester for the warmth of her friendship, her skill as a teacher, her enthusiasm and encouragement and just for the plain fun of it. She was a marvelous teacher and inspired a whole generation of would-be painters. Even into her mid-70s she made the arrangements and took classes each spring for a week of plein aire painting in Zion National Park. There she pushed us all day in the hot sun to paint our best and then led us on hikes at the end of our paint day and into friendly chatter around the campfire at night.I had the pleasure of taking most of her workshop-like classes over at least 12 years and the honor of taking over her classes in Aspen when she no longer wished to make the long drive into town. I try to teach my classes as she taught me, with encouragement, warmth and caring. Dottie, I lift my brush to you each time I start a painting.Georgeann WaggamanAspen
