Library enticing youths to read this summer

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Reading is Out of This World summer reading program for youngsters will begin at the Pitkin County Library on Friday, June 9.

The program, for children going into first through fifth grades, will kick off with a Blast Off to Reading party at 10 a.m. There will be games and treats, and kids can sign up for the summer program, which awards “book bucks” for each book they read. The bucks earn prizes at the conclusion of the program.

New for older students this year is So Many Books, So Little Time, a summer reading program for youths going into sixth through 12th grades. The program offers incentives to read books this summer – namely gift certificates good at local theaters, for videos, CDs, the Hot Springs Pool, Funland, Kolorwheel, Johnson Park and more.

Signup for So Many Books also begins Friday at 10 a.m. Those who register will get a free book.

Registration is under way for the the Young Storytellers Club at the library, open to 10- through 13-year-olds. Participants will learn storytelling from professionals through discussion and improvisational theater games. They will create their own performance for a public presentation on Aug. 16.

The club meets Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m., June 21 through Aug. 16, at the library. The program is free. Call 925-4025 to register.
