Lexus won’t find its nexus on Aspen mall

Aspen slammed the brakes Monday on a plan to park seven luxury autos on the Mill Street mall in conjunction with a June gathering of Lexus sales people.

“There is no way. I’m sorry,” said Mayor Helen Klanderud. “I cannot support this request.”

Rocky Mountain Connections is organizing the event on June 3-5 in Aspen for some 300 people, according to City Clerk Kathryn Koch. The attendees will be staying at the St. Regis-Aspen; events will take place at the hotel and the Wheeler Opera House.

Organizers were hoping to park seven Lexuses on the mall from 2 p.m. to midnight on June 4. The cars would be lighted up at night.

While the council has previously discussed loosening up its strict rules regarding commercial displays on public rights of way, council members unanimously concurred last night that the Lexus proposal goes too far.

“It’s a little bit over the top,” said Councilman Tim Semrau. “We may want to loosen up, but this is too loose.”

Klanderud suggested event organizers park the cars in the roomy St. Regis courtyard instead of on the mall.

Had the council approved the request, the city parking department had suggested charging its standard fee for using up a parking space – $14 per car, or $98 altogether.
