Lewis wins, everybody else loses
Dear Editor:
There is only one winner in this – Mr. Lewis. The nonprofits lose. The people of Aspen lose. Most importantly the University of Colorado Medical School loses. They may not think so with money in their pocket but they will have lost a magical place which sparked creativity and collaboration. That is something irreplaceable.
The end result is what we now see. Eve Homeyer will be remembered as the mayor who helped build the Aspen Idea and Mick Ireland will be remembered as the mayor who allowed it to be torn down. (Like it or not, Mick, the buck stops with you.)
There was only one strategy which the city employed, which was true to the spirit of the Given and to the original gift of Mrs. Paepcke and that was to change the zoning to academic.
