Letter: Maybe the cyclists should slow down

Maybe the cyclists should slow down

Dear Editor:

Margaret O’Brien’s wrote a July 11 letter in The Aspen Times, “Look both ways, motorists,” about motorists not looking at intersections of the Hopkins Avenue bikeway.

She mentions that she has had three close calls in the past few weeks. She also states, “What drivers might not realize is that we’re coming downhill and usually traveling at 25 to 30 mph coming into town, and bikes cannot stop as quickly as cars!”

Well, Margaret, that would make you a speeder who is breaking the speed limit of the town of Aspen. And in case you did not know, the town just lowered the speed limit to 20! Granted, signage is not yet in place, but 30 mph is speeding.

I suggest you get those breaks looked at by a qualified bicycle mechanic! Like they say, “Put the fun between your legs!”
