Letter: Hotel handout: seriously?
Hotel handout: seriously?
One million dollars! That’s what the developers of Willits want the town of Basalt to give them for building a hotel: $250,000 in fee waivers plus $75,000 per year for 10 years from the general fund.
They claim the Willits project is a success but now they want the taxpayers to contribute to it. Don’t you just love capitalists? First they want government to stay out of their way and then they want government to lend them a hand.
If the town of Basalt has all this extra money, the first thing they should consider is lowering taxes so it actually benefits the citizens. Maybe they should just send each of its citizens a check.

The city of Aspen’s office building is exempt from paying encroachment fees, yet private developers have to now pay $9 a square foot, per month, starting in 2020.
