Letter (Aug. 28): No more penthouses in Aspen

No more penthouses

Editor’s note: The following letter was written to members of Aspen City Council.

The Jerome Professional Building redevelopment is the first of many redevelopments in the Mill and Puppy Smith corridor toward the river.

City Council should start working on code immediately to address the incompatibility of free-market residential with commercial in this area. Otherwise Aspen will end up with more projects where the residential penthouse component is the development driver and the commercial is lifeless (Obermeyer), or high-end (Brunello Cucinelli) or in conflict with the penthouse neighbors (Silverqueen Lounge).

Fix the zoning by removing penthouses as a funding mechanism before, not after, more penthouse applications along Mill Street are submitted.
