Letter: A Habitat home in Aspen would be great
As the first Habitat for Humanity homeowner in the Roaring Fork Valley, I wanted to share my opinion on the discussion about the Aspen Pitkin County Housing Authority Board members’ interest in partnering with Habitat to build a home with a family in Aspen.
This possibility is fantastic!!!
While I love my home I helped build in Emma in 2001, I can imagine even more benefits for a Habitat family in Aspen. My two biggest expenses used to be my housing and transportation costs. Now, my interest-free Habitat mortgage on my home is far less than I used to pay in rent. However, I still have extensive costs for commuting as I did when I commuted to Aspen. A family living and working in Aspen can save a great deal on transportation costs. I also can see how saving time travelling to and from work will enable more quality time with their children.
Habitat is a wonderful organization that partners with many generous local individuals to help transform lives by creating safe and affordable housing for people like me. I just needed a hand-up when I was a struggling single-mom trying to keep my life on track with my four children in the face of difficult economics. With Habitat’s help, I was able to turn the corner and make things work. My children are now all grown up and have graduated (with one still attending) college. Experiencing the support from Habitat and this wonderful community has enabled us to believe in our ability to overcome all of the hurdles we have faced. It has given us great pride in our community and the desire to keep giving back. We are so grateful — thank you!
It was so heartwarming to hear the positive comments from the Housing Authority’s Board members at their meeting on Feb. 5 about the many benefits they see of having Habitat for Humanity partner with a hard-working, deserving family to improve their lives in this valley.
